my laptop came with vista home premium. with much deliberation, I finally decide to ditch it and go back to xp. laggy performance and inability for some of my programs to hook to kernel make me rethink. it will go back to it once sp1 or sp2 is out. And also after I upgraded my ram to 2gb or something, currently just 1gb.

Tried installing win xp x64 in hope to unleash the 64bitness in my processors. so far all the processors that I have, only my pentium 3 mobile is incapable of 64bit. Want to release the beast. however, again due to the lack of drivers, installation failed. that was a while back, before I came to sweden.

Now, I couldn’t stand vista anymore, burnt the xp tablet cds, gathered most of the drivers I can find. Installed. problem left now is with graphics card driver and modem driver(not so important). Found a suitable gfx driver for the geforce go 6150. However I noticed the gpu temperature is ever soaring higher and higher. Startup is 70 deg C, climbing to 80 quickly and sometimes reaching 90 over. Most of the time it stabilizes at 80 deg C, which I still think is too high. Stupid hp refuses to give me vista 64 bit cd, and refuses to publish more win xp drivers for this laptop model. Fortunately there are kind and good people who shares info, I’m up and running. Shortly after I installed, the laptop kept shutting down on it’s own, powering off without proper shutdown, clear sign of overheating. Of what, is the question. My processor is always at about 40 deg C, the only problem I can think of is the gpu at 80 deg C. Luckily I found a thread suggesting the bios update. Bios update is so important! and it fixed this problem somewhat. I no longer have the random shut down problem, at least for now. Choi! The bios update is under the windows vista driver section of this model at hp website. It can run in windows xp. Just go ahead and flash the damn thing. Stupid hp. Blatant forcing of vista down our throats wouldn’t work.

Now my laptop is much faster, much much faster. Happy. The temperatures are still high. damn. dunno is it due to the improper fan control. But it’s not shutting down, that’s all I care about. The amd dual core optimizer software seem to be working well too. unzipping files seem faster. maybe it’s just my imagination. hahaha it’s all in the mind.
